A Wide Range of Wonderful Music

Established almost by accident some 40 years ago with a small song recital to raise a little money for the church, Music at Beaulieu has grown from that small beginning. Now a charitable trust, run entirely by volunteers, Music at Beaulieu arranges some 12 to 14 concerts each year, providing excellent inexpensive music from classical to jazz and offering a platform for young as well as established world-class musicians.

Artistes performing at Music at Beaulieu concerts have ranged from famous musicians, such as Dame Moura Lympany and Jack Gibbons; musicians who have become famous, such as Katerina Karneus; musicians who will undoubtedly become famous, such as Chenyin Li; brilliant young performers from the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Purcell School of Music; local choral societies; the Hampshire Youth Orchestra and the Hampshire Youth Choir; jazz groups, operatic societies, finalists from the Music at Beaulieu Award competition and many other talented musicians.

Not all the music is classical - our jazz concerts have featured the world famous Chris Barber, Acker Bilk , Kenny Ball and Humphrey Lyttelton. We have held operas featuring Rosalind Plowright, and entertained famous divas from overseas including Elizabeth Söderström and Joanna Porackova. We have welcomed singers including the Yale University Whiffenpoofs, the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, and local choirs including the Quiristers and Gregoriana from Winchester.

Regular Highlights

“Collegium Regale” - The Choral Scholars and Organ Scholar of King's College Cambridge. For more than 20 years now Collegium Regale has come to Beaulieu to give a concert - part sacred, part secular - and have always had a capacity audience. The King's College choir is, of course, famous for the annual Christmas Eve Carol Service that is seen on television by thousands.

Once a year we have a jazz concert with such world famous artistes as Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Humphrey Lyttelton.

For many years now we have had an evening which we call "Glyndebourne at Beaulieu", which we organise in conjunction with the Wessex Glyndebourne Association.  Four soloists from the Glyndebourne Touring Company perform arias and ensembles from the Glyndebourne repertoire. The audience is invited to picnic in Church Meadow. All three are invariably a sell out.

We usually hold at least two devotional evenings with congregational singing - one on Good Friday and the other on Advent Sunday.

Just before Christmas we invite a young choir to sing and lead the audience in Christmas carols.

Previous Highlights

Handel's Messiah, including a number of “Sing The Messiah”, where the audience is the chorus, St John's Passion by J. S. Bach, Handel's Elijah, Elgar's “Light of Life”. Our opera performances, with orchestra have included Madame Butterfly, Tosca and The Magic Flute, as well as Gilbert and Sullivan operas by the Southampton Operatic Society.
